Auction Review – Detailed Look At the MyID Auction

June 8, 2008 · Print This Article

As I previously discussed, there is a MyId dot ca auction in process. I said I’d analyze the domains soon, and now that it’s the weekend I’ve had some quiet time to do this. Here is the list of domains on auction, with the reserve range in brackets, and my thoughts on some of them afterwards:

2-3 characters
1. l1.ca ($501 – $1000) – I’ll be interested to see how this auction goes. I think it is a great price, but a similar domain in the last auction did not meet reserve. It looks like this domain may have been recently caught on a drop.
2. Tiz.ca ($101 – $250) – Tiz.mobi sold last year for $506.
3. UVM.ca ($101 – $250)
4. VP.ca (more than $10000) – One of my favourite domains in this auction. Not quite as nice as the record breaking CV.ca, but close.
5. XZ.ca ($2501 – $5000) – An excellent price for a two letter dot ca domain.

Business / Financial – There is a really good selection of financial domains at the auction. From what I’ve seen, financial domains are some of the best selling dot ca domains.

1. Bond.ca (more than $10000) – Obviously a top domain and one of my favourite ones in this auction.
2. CheapTalk.ca ($251 – $500) – Nice domain, but I’m not sure why this is considered a financial domain.
3. DailyStocks.ca ($501 – $1000)
4. eWealth.ca ($501 – $1000) – eWealth.com sold in 2005 for $7,000 – I’m sure it would be worth much more now.
5. fiduciaire.ca ($251 – $500)
6. Fines.ca ($2501 – $5000)
7. HomeEquities.ca ($2501 – $5000)
8. Investigations.ca ($2501 – $5000) – this domain sold last year for $3,000.

9. InvestmentBanks.ca ($1001 – $2500)
10. moneyadvice.ca ($251 – $500)
11. MortgagesOnline.ca ($2501 – $5000)
12. ReadyMixConcrete.ca ($251 – $500)
13. StockTips.ca ($1001 – $2500) – this domain seems like the best bargain in the financial category. If you’re a developer, this would be an easy site to build out and monetize.
14. StockTraders.ca ($1001 – $2500)
15. VP.ca (more than $10000)

Education – Education is one of the highest paying verticals on the internet and I’d say that every single domain in this category is stellar.
1. Classes.ca ($2501 – $5000) – Excellent one word generic
2. Diplomas.ca ($2501 – $5000) – Another excellent one word generic. Diplomas.net just sold for $4,601.
3. MBAonline.ca ($2501 – $5000) – There is aggressive competition for students between MBA schools and huge amounts of money involved. The University of Toronto charges almost $80,000 per year in tuition for international students, who are going to be researching their options online. MBAonline.net sold last year for $1,750.
4. SummerSchool.ca ($0 – $1) – a gutsy no reserve auction – I’ll be curious to see if the seller’s gamble paid off. SummerSchool.net recently sold for $1,500.

Entertainment
1. Bite.ca ($2501 – $5000) – Great one word generic. It’s use isn’t limited to the entertainment industry.
2. MobileSPA.ca ($251 – $500) – The auction description says: “This is an actual website and ready business with everything in place.” No traffic or revenue stats are provided, and I would assume these are minimal. Perhaps not the best venue to sell this kind of site.
3. MovieChannel.ca ($1001 – $2500)
4. TorontoHotline.ca ($2501 – $5000) – seems a bit pricey

French – as usual, my French isn’t good enough to comment on the French domains.
1. Desir.ca ($1001 – $2500)
2. fiduciaire.ca ($251 – $500)
3. Friandises.ca ($251 – $500)
4. Joueurs.ca ($251 – $500)
5. tribu.ca ($501 – $1000)

Gambling
1. Gamble.ca (more than $10000) – One of the best domains in the entire auction. A single word generic that defines the entire category. Even Gamble.us sold last year for $6,400 and the dot us extension is a very poor performer. Gamble.mobi sold last year for $33,000.
2. OnlineBets.ca ($251 – $500)

General
1. Amazed.ca ($1001 – $2500) – a great one word generic with a lot of uses and a reasonable reserve
2. CalgarySingles.ca ($1001 – $2500)
3. Catholics.ca ($1001 – $2500) – category defining term
4. Cindy.ca ($2501 – $5000) – one of the most popular women’s names
5. Ivonne.ca ($251 – $500)
6. Manicure.ca ($1001 – $2500) – great one word generic
7. moneyadvice.ca ($251 – $500)

Geo Domains
1. AdventureCanada.ca ($5001 – $10000) – seems overpriced
2. bcHockey.ca ($1001 – $2500)
3. CanadianParent.ca ($501 – $1000)
4. CanadianTeen.ca ($501 – $1000) – Teens.ca sold in 2006 for $4,382 – I’m sure it would be worth much more now.
5. CanadianTravelInsurance.ca ($1001 – $2500)
6. MontrealDentist.ca ($2501 – $5000)
7. MontrealJob.ca ($501 – $1000) – OntarioJob.ca just sold for $750 at the last MyID auction.
8. OntarioCondos.ca ($501 – $1000)
9. OttawaSearch.ca ($101 – $250)
10. QuebecTravel.ca ($1001 – $2500) – My favourite domain in this category.
11. TorontoHotline.ca ($2501 – $5000)

Internet/Technology
1. CheapTalk.ca ($251 – $500)
2. ComputerForum.ca ($2 – $100)
3. Dialup.ca ($1001 – $2500) – do people still use this?
4. InternetAccess.ca ($5001 – $10000) – An excellent domain at a reasonable price
5. LiveAuction.ca ($1001 – $2500) – LiveAuction.tv sold in 2005 for $2,500 and is definitely worth much more now.
6. Providers.ca ($1001 – $2500) – Provider.ca was bid up to $5,000 at the last MyID auction. I’d say the plural is probably better than the singular.
7. WebsiteHosting.ca ($5001 – $10000) – a leading generic for a very large and profitable industry, and reasonably priced to boot.

Jobs/Employment – The recent record breaking sale of Jobs.ca for $600,000 is on everyone’s mind. OntarioJob.ca just sold for $750 at the last MyID auction. I think that the plural “jobs” domains are worth more than the singular “job” domains. The larger the population of the geographic location, the more valuable the domain is. Most of the domains in this category seem to have modest reserves, so there are a lot of good bargains here.

3. Enhancement(s).ca ($501 – $1000) – According to the spam I get, this is what every man and woman wants. Two domains for a really low reserve in a very profitable niche – this seems like the best deal in this category.
4. iAttorneys.ca ($501 – $1000) – I don’t think that people use the word “attorneys” much in Canada.
5. InternalMedicine.ca ($101 – $250) – A really low reserve
6. LasikEye(s).ca ($2501 – $5000) – A popular procedure that people are willing to pay handsomely for.
7. LegalConsultant(s).ca ($1001 – $2500)
8. MontrealDentist.ca ($2501 – $5000)
9. PainClinic.ca ($0 – $1) – This is another one of the no reserve domains. Will be interesting to see how this one goes.

6. LogoWear.ca ($2 – $100)
7. TennisBracelet.ca ($1001 – $2500)

Sports – I’d be cautions with trademarks on some of the names in this category. If you’re not sure about a particular name, it may make sense to consult with a trademark lawyer.

7. OilersForum.ca ($2 – $100)
8. PowerBoat.ca ($1001 – $2500)
9. SensForum.ca ($2 – $100)

Travel
1. AdventureCanada.ca ($5001 – $10000)
2. CanadianTravelInsurance.ca ($1001 – $2500)
3. iTourist.ca ($251 – $500)
4. LowFare.ca ($2501 – $5000)

In all, there are a lot of good bargains available. What’s more, the reserve price on a lot of the best domains seems reasonable, unlike at many domain auctions where the top domains seem to be there for show but not priced for sale. There’s also a very wide range of domains available – there should be something here for everyone.
